It's never too early to start making something.

The thing is, no one ever told us how to actually get started.

Between the standardized testing culture and our own inertia and inhibitions, it can seem like we were set up to lose.

But rather than accept this, we can change the game.

We can make something.

Because when we do something, anything
can happen.

Don't Make Art Just Make Something edition by Miranda Aisling Arts Photography eBooks

I purchased this book for my sister whom has recently lost her husband to ALS. She was once a fine artist but has understandable lost a zest for life. This book is charming and hopefully what she needs to put things back into perspective. My only disappointment was when I saw the book it was just a few pages longer than the "The Old Man and The Sea". For a book of that size I felt $14.99 was a bit overpriced.

Don't Make Art Just Make Something edition by Miranda Aisling Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

"Don't Make Art, Just Make Something" is a fantastic book about the challenges and wonders of creating. In society, we often teach young people to rote-learn in order to pass exams, rather than focusing on thinking, problem-solving, and risk-taking. As a result, many of us grow up with little confidence in our own creativity. Yet, as Miranda Aisling shows, when we focus on creating, we are at our most powerful and inspired. This short, funny, intelligent book will get you motivated to create.
The book sounded inspiring from the cover and went south from there. It read like mumbo jumbo of tons of quotes smashed together. I think someone just wanted to make a book and publish it. And that kinda sums it up even from the words of the Arthur who I think was fibbing a little to make themselves sound more relivent and smarter that they really were. I felt that the Arthur thinks that their readers were dumb and that we would believe anything they would write. I didn't like it. Sorry.
Purchased this book for self and also gifted a couple of copies for addition to our huge public library collection.
A very useful book... I would categorize this book under parenting books and self-help books. This will hopefully release some anxieties of parents who avoid the path less traveled route in raising their children in diff aspects of life... child rearing, education, opening doors for their child til old age. It's a book to own and keep at home. It's a book that one can go back and re read every now and then as we all go through different phases in our lives.
can be a good gift for any occasion grad from K,grade school, mid school, HS, or college, or may be a sacramental book present, or any friend in diff situations happy times or difficult moments.
awesome... well written and easy to read esp for busy people.
enlightening...
a must read. will definitely recommend to all ages!
a library (private or public) MUST have
go get your copy ASAP so you can start Making Something for oneself, one's community, or the world in one's own very ways!
GREAT Book, Easy read, to the point with a Great deal of information and inspiration. Great read for all who want to be more than ordinary. I am glad that I was in the right spot at the right time to meet this author. Though our meeting was brief, after reading this book I know now why I was there. Time to go make something, even if it's not a Masterpiece !
It was great book to read doing the things you qaint to do is do anything. This is the secret for achieving your goals
As a working artist, sometimes I need a kick of inspiration to remind me why I follow this path. It's easy to get jaded by client work and forget that underneath the work is passion. DMAJMS fits the bill with an eclectic collection of poems, self-reflection, musings about the creative process, and observations about the relationship between creativity and mainstream education.

I've given this book to four (soon to be five) people as Christmas or birthday gifts, and even bought an extra copy because I know I'll find a sixth person who could benefit from what Aisling has to say. So far I've gifted this book to other working artists (two photographers and a musician) as well as people who are less far along their creative journeys. I only hope it inspires them as much as it's inspired me.
Buy this book. Everyone. Speaking as a sculptor, architect and visual arts instructor at several community art centers (kids and adults), this book carries the exact message I try to start off with and gently repeat in my classes and general discussions with many people who are concerned that they don't have "talent", or are "not creative" or are otherwise are under-confident about making something. But it can be as simple as Ms. Aisling states. She has nailed the simple truth if we just start, anywhere/somewhere/with some intent, something wonderful can or might happen and often does. This is not guaranteed and not guaranteed to be art or anything like art, but wonderful in ways that the "actor" cannot imagine. And it is unique and no one else on earth could have done it and it only exists because you did it. So glide through this book, give it some thought (not too much) ...and then go make something!
